Mark Zuckerberg Is Writing Code Again for the First Time in 20 Years. He Is Using Claude.

Meta's CEO has submitted three diffs to the company monorepo. His tool of choice is not Llama. It is Anthropic's Claude Code CLI.

Mark Zuckerberg has not written production code in roughly two decades. He built the original Facebook in a Harvard dorm room, then spent the next 20 years being a CEO. Now, according to The Pragmatic Engineer's Gergely Orosz, Zuckerberg is back in the codebase. He has submitted three diffs to Meta's monorepo. And his AI tool of choice is not Meta's own Llama. It is Anthropic's Claude Code CLI.

Let that sink in. The CEO of one of the world's largest AI companies is using a competitor's AI tool to write code at his own company. That is either a remarkable act of intellectual honesty or an absolutely damning indictment of Llama's developer tooling. Probably both.

This revelation comes as Business Insider reports that Meta is aggressively pushing AI-powered coding across the entire company. Some engineering teams now have explicit goals to produce 50% to 80% of their code with AI assistance. The company's Reality Labs division has undergone the most radical AI-native reorganization, abolishing old job titles and restructuring around small "AI pods." Managers are now "AI pod leads" and employees are "AI builders."

Zuckerberg's vision is the "100x engineer" who commands armies of AI agents instead of managing teams of junior developers. In theory, this means faster shipping and more leverage per employee. In practice, it means Meta's 76,000 employees should be very nervous. If AI makes each engineer ten times more productive, the math on headcount gets uncomfortable fast.

Former Meta engineering director Erik Meijer said the quiet part out loud: staff attending internal "AI Weeks" training sessions might be "digging their own graves." A business with Meta's user base cannot just ship ten times more features because users cannot absorb them. The logical alternative is fewer people doing the same work.

Meta insists the AI push will not lead to layoffs. But the company has already been weighing major headcount reductions this year, and its revenue-per-employee metric is now a top-tier focus for leadership.

Our take: The Zuckerberg detail is the headline, but the Meta story underneath it is the one that matters. This is not a CEO doing a PR stunt by writing a few lines of code. This is the CEO of a $1.5 trillion company personally validating a competitor's product while simultaneously restructuring his entire workforce around the premise that AI makes most human labor redundant. That he chose Claude over Llama tells you everything about where the models actually stand. That Meta's employees are being asked to automate their own roles tells you everything about where the industry is headed.
