Anthropic announced Wednesday that it has signed a deal with SpaceX to lease the entire computing capacity of Colossus 1, xAI's massive data center in Memphis, Tennessee. The facility houses more than 220,000 Nvidia GPUs and delivers 300 megawatts of capacity. Anthropic says it will have access within the month.

Read that again. Elon Musk, the man who wrote "Anthropic hates Western civilization" on X in February, just handed Dario Amodei's company the keys to one of the world's largest AI supercomputers.

What changed? According to Musk's own post on X, he spent time with Anthropic's senior team over the past week and came away "impressed." His exact words: "Everyone I met was highly competent and cared a great deal about doing the right thing. No one set off my evil detector." From "hates civilization" to "no evil detected" in three months. Even by Musk standards, that is a breathtaking pivot.

The business logic is simpler than the rhetoric. SpaceX merged with xAI earlier this year, and xAI has already transitioned its Grok training to the newer Colossus 2 facility. Colossus 1 was sitting idle. Anthropic is burning through compute at a pace that outstrips its existing infrastructure. Anthropic committed $200 billion to Google Cloud last week. It has a $30 billion Azure deal with Microsoft. It signed a 5 GW agreement with Amazon. And now it is taking over a facility purpose-built by its rival's parent company.

The immediate impact: Anthropic is doubling Claude Code's rate limits for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise customers, effective today. Peak hour throttling is gone for Pro and Max. API rate limits for Claude Opus models are getting a "considerable" increase. If you have been hitting walls trying to use Claude Code for extended sessions, this is the fix.

But here is the part that sounds like science fiction: Anthropic has also "expressed interest" in partnering with SpaceX to develop multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity. Data centers in space. Running Claude from orbit. This is not a press release throwaway line. SpaceX is the only company on Earth (literally) that could make orbital compute infrastructure viable, and Anthropic just signaled it wants in.

The timing makes this even more surreal. This deal drops on the same day Shivon Zilis, the mother of four of Musk's children and a former OpenAI board member, took the stand in Musk's $134 billion lawsuit against OpenAI. Musk is suing one AI company for allegedly betraying him while simultaneously leasing his supercomputer to another AI company he was publicly attacking weeks ago.

What does this tell us? Two things. First, Anthropic's compute hunger is so extreme that it will take capacity from literally anyone who has GPUs, including a company whose CEO publicly trashed it. Second, Musk is now a landlord to three of the four frontier AI labs (xAI uses its own infrastructure, OpenAI runs on Microsoft Azure, and Google DeepMind has its own TPUs). SpaceX leasing to Anthropic means Musk collects rent from his competitor while his own xAI trains on the next-generation facility.

The AI compute market has officially entered its landlord era. Ideology is for X posts. Infrastructure is for balance sheets.
