OpenAI Kills Sora, Bets Everything on a ChatGPT "Super App" Ahead of IPO

Six months after launch, OpenAI pulls the plug on its AI video tool. The real story: a company trying to focus before going public.

OpenAI announced Tuesday it would shut down Sora, its AI video generation tool, just six months after launch. The Sora API, used by developers and Hollywood studios, goes dark too. Sora downloads had cratered from 3.3 million in November 2025 to just 1.1 million by February 2026.

But this isn't really a story about a failed product. It's about a company that's been running like a startup incubator finally admitting it needs to grow up, because an IPO is coming.

The End of the Y Combinator Era

Since ChatGPT's launch, Sam Altman has run OpenAI the way he used to run Y Combinator. place bets everywhere and see what sticks. A video tool. A browser. Hardware devices. Robots. A coding agent. The company's culture was described internally as "bottom-up," with resources flowing to promising ideas as they emerged rather than following executive road maps.

That's great for innovation. It's terrible for public market investors who want to see focused execution and predictable revenue. CFO Sarah Friar told CNBC the company needs to be "ready to be a public company."

The Super App Gambit

The plan now: merge ChatGPT, its coding tool Codex, and its browser Atlas into a single "super app." OpenAI wants ChatGPT to become the one AI interface people use for everything. A true super assistant. The Wall Street Journal had previously reported on this direction.

It's the right strategy, but it comes with a confession baked in: the scatter-shot approach wasn't working. Sora was the most visible casualty, but multiple sources say the company's GPUs and employees have been spread thin across too many projects.

Our Take

Killing Sora is the smartest thing OpenAI has done in months. Video generation is a feature, not a company. The real question is whether they can ship the super app before Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini eat their consumer market share. The IPO clock is ticking.
