Meta Will Fire 8,000 People on May 20. It Scheduled a Second Wave for This Fall.

Mark Zuckerberg has marked his calendar. On Monday, May 20, 2026, Meta will execute the largest single-day tech layoff in company history, cutting approximately 8,000 employees from its 78,865-person workforce.

The timing isn't coincidental. Meta is spending $135 billion on AI infrastructure this year while simultaneously eliminating roughly 10% of its human workforce. Reuters confirmed the exact date through multiple sources, with additional cuts planned for the second half of 2026.

This isn't Meta's first rodeo. The company has conducted three major layoff rounds since November 2022, cutting over 21,000 jobs total. But May 20 marks the most concentrated single-day elimination in Meta's history.

Zuckerberg's strategy is becoming clear: replace humans with AI wherever possible, then pour the savings into the AI infrastructure war against OpenAI and Anthropic. The math is brutal but simple. 8,000 employees at an average $200,000 total compensation equals $1.6 billion in annual savings. That's enough to buy 320,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs at current prices.

Meta joins Amazon, Oracle, and dozens of other tech companies in what analysts are calling the "AI efficiency purge." Companies are eliminating human roles that AI can perform while investing the savings in compute power and AI talent. It's the most dramatic workforce reshuffling in tech history.

The affected employees won't know until May 20. Internal sources describe a "normal day until it isn't" approach, with notifications sent via email and Slack at 9 AM Pacific. Severance packages include standard Meta benefits: 16 weeks base pay plus 2 additional weeks for every year of service.

The numbers are staggering. Tech companies have eliminated 95,278 jobs in 2026, with 882 workers losing their jobs every single day. That's a 31% increase from 2025's daily average. Meta's May 20 cut alone represents 8.3% of the year's total tech layoffs in a single day.

The second wave of cuts planned for H2 2026 could bring Meta's total workforce reduction to 15,000-20,000 people this year. That would make 2026 Meta's most aggressive downsizing since the company went public in 2012.

For Zuckerberg, May 20 isn't just about cost cutting. It's about survival in the AI arms race. As one Meta executive put it: "We're not firing people to save money. We're firing people to have money to spend on the future."
