OpenAI Co-Founder Karpathy Defects to Anthropic
The AI talent wars just got nuclear. Karpathy didnt just leave OpenAI. He joined the company Musk called evil.
The AI talent wars just produced their most devastating defection.
Andrej Karpathy, OpenAI co-founder and the man who coined "vibe coding," has joined Anthropic. Not just any role. The pre-training team. Under Nick Joseph. Starting his own team focused on using Claude to accelerate pre-training research.
This is the guy who built Tesla autopilot. Who made self-driving AI actually work in the real world. Who left OpenAI once, came back in 2023, then left again in 2024 to start Eureka Labs.
Now hes working for the company his former boss Elon Musk called "evil."
The timing is brutal. Same week Musk lost his OpenAI lawsuit unanimously in under two hours. Same week Anthropic is running Claude on Musks own SpaceX Colossus supercomputer. Same week theyre about to close a $900 billion valuation round.
Karpathy announced on X: "I think the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative. I am very excited to join the team here and get back to R&D."
Translation: The man who understands AI training better than almost anyone thinks Anthropic is where the next breakthrough happens.
This isnt just a hire. Its a statement. Anthropic also just brought on Chris Rohlf, cybersecurity veteran from Meta and Yahoo Paranoids, to their frontier red team. Theyre building the A-team.
The war that actually matters isnt in the courtroom. Its for the people who know how to build the next generation of AI. And right now, Anthropic is winning.
