Right now, as you read this, millions of Hungarians are walking into polling stations to decide whether Viktor Orban stays in power for a fifth term. They have already been told who to vote for by Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jake Paul. None of those people said a word.

Hungary is holding its most consequential election in decades today, April 12. Challenger Peter Magyar is threatening to end Orban is 16-year grip on the country. And the campaign that preceded it has become the most comprehensive test case for AI-powered election interference in European history.

The Deepfake Celebrity Endorsements

NewsGuard, the disinformation tracking organization, identified a network of at least 34 Hungarian-language TikTok accounts sharing AI-generated videos to support Orban and discredit Magyar. The videos feature AI-generated versions of Hollywood celebrities speaking Hungarian and delivering political messages.

In one video, a fake Johnny Depp stands against a Budapest backdrop and calls Orban "the boss," portraying him as the embodiment of liberty and stability. In others, AI Leonardo DiCaprio and AI Jake Paul deliver similar messages. Magyar is portrayed as chaotic. The European Union is framed as a threat to freedom.

TikTok itself confirmed the scale. In a transparency report published April 3, the platform said it detected six coordinated networks totaling 400 accounts attempting to influence the Hungarian election. Most showed support for Orban is party, Fidesz.

Russia Ran Its Own Operation

Alongside the domestic AI campaign, researchers identified Storm-1516, a well-documented Russian disinformation unit, targeting the election directly. The operation created a fake Euronews-style website and fabricated an article claiming Magyar had delivered a "blistering critique of Trump" at a rally. He never said it.

A separate Russian-linked campaign spread the fabricated claim that Magyar planned to reintroduce mandatory military conscription and send Hungarian men to fight in Ukraine. Researchers at the Gnida Project, an investigative collective tracking disinformation, traced it directly back to Storm-1516.

Another AI-generated video depicted a Hungarian father being executed for refusing to fight for Ukraine. The message was clear: vote for Magyar and your sons die in a foreign war. It is entirely fabricated.

The Domestic Machine Is Worse Than Russia

Here is the detail that matters most. Hungarian fact-checkers at Lakmusz say the majority of disinformation is not coming from Russia. It is coming from Orban is own party, its allied media networks, and proxy organizations. Szilard Teczar, editor-in-chief at Lakmusz, told France 24: "They have a better understanding of the local context. The added value of disinformation coming directly from Russia does not seem to be that huge."

In other words, Orban is party does not need Russian help to pollute its own election. It has AI for that. The ruling party has been running a sophisticated AI video operation on TikTok for months, accelerating as the election approached.

Why This Election Is a Warning Shot

Hungary is not a tech backwater. It is an EU member state with 10 million people, holding a parliamentary election where the outcome will shape European politics for years. Orban is Putin is closest ally in Europe. If he falls, the EU is geopolitical alignment shifts. If he stays, it is partly because AI-generated Johnny Depp told undecided voters he was the right choice.

This is the template. AI deepfake celebrity endorsements, coordinated TikTok bot networks, fabricated news websites, synthetic war propaganda. All deployed against a functioning democracy in real time. The US midterms are seven months away. France has elections next year. The UK is not far behind.

The question is not whether AI will be used to manipulate elections. Hungary just proved it already is. The question is whether anyone is going to do something about it before the next one.
