While OpenAI, Anthropic and Google fight over the AI frontier in public, Jeff Bezos has been quietly assembling a stealth army. His secret AI startup, codenamed Project Prometheus, has already hired close to 100 engineers and researchers. And the latest recruit is a big one: Kyle Kozic, a co-founder of Elon Musks xAI who most recently worked at OpenAI.
The Financial Times first reported Kozics move on Tuesday. He will focus on infrastructure at Prometheus, which Bezos leads alongside former Google executive Vikram Bajaj. The lab is building AI systems that can understand the physical world, not just text and images.
Why Bezos Is Doing This Himself
Bezos already has a $4 billion stake in Anthropic through Amazon. He could have just doubled down there. Instead, he is building something entirely separate. That tells you everything about where he thinks the real opportunity is.
Anthropic and OpenAI are locked in a chatbot and coding assistant war. Prometheus appears to be targeting something different: physical AI. Systems that can perceive, navigate and manipulate the real world. Think autonomous logistics, robotics, spatial intelligence. The Amazon connection is obvious and intentional.
The Talent Raid Is the Real Story
Kozic co-founded xAI, left for OpenAI, and now has landed at Bezoss lab. That trajectory tells you exactly how the AI talent market works right now: the best people go wherever the most ambitious project is, and they will burn through multiple employers in a single year to find it.
Nearly 100 hires for a lab that most people have never heard of is a serious statement. For context, Anthropic had fewer than 200 employees when it built Claude 2. Prometheus already has half that headcount and has not shipped a single product.
What to Watch
The AI industry just added another well-funded heavyweight. Bezos has functionally unlimited capital, a direct pipeline to Amazons infrastructure, and now a growing team of engineers who have worked at every major AI lab. Project Prometheus does not need to beat OpenAI at chatbots. It needs to win the physical AI race before Google, Tesla and Figure get there first. That is a very different contest, and Bezos might be the best-positioned person on Earth to win it.
