Here is the most Anthropic thing to happen this year: the company built an AI coding tool so good that people are paying $100 a month for it, and now it cannot actually serve them. Claude Code users are hitting their usage limits in under an hour. Anthropic's own team called it "way faster than expected." That's corporate for "we did not see this coming."

The complaints are everywhere. Reddit. Discord. Developer forums. One Max 5 subscriber ($100/month) reported exhausting their entire quota in a single hour of coding. Another Pro user said they get roughly 12 usable days out of every 30. That is not a subscription. That is a lottery ticket.

The timing could not be worse. Last week, Anthropic quietly reduced quotas during peak hours, a change the company said would affect "around 7 percent of users." The same week, a March promotion that doubled usage limits outside peak windows expired. And to top it off, developers who reverse-engineered the Claude Code binary found two cache bugs that silently inflate token usage by 10 to 20 times. Some users confirmed that downgrading to an older version immediately fixed the problem.

This is the paradox at the heart of Anthropic's 2026 story. The company doubled its annualized revenue to $19 billion in just two months, largely on the back of Claude Code's explosive adoption. Let me say that plainly: Anthropic is making so much money, so fast, that it physically cannot serve its customers. That is either the best problem in Silicon Valley or the fastest way to hand your market share to OpenAI. Probably both.

The developer community is not in a forgiving mood. These are people who restructured their entire workflows around Claude Code. They chose Anthropic over GitHub Copilot and Cursor specifically because the output quality was better. Now they are staring at rate limit screens before lunch. The goodwill that took months to build can evaporate in a billing cycle.

Anthropic says fixing this is "the top priority for the team." It needs to be. When your paying customers are publicly debating whether to downgrade or switch providers, priority is not strong enough. This is an emergency. The product works. The infrastructure does not. And every hour that gap stays open, a developer somewhere is typing "cursor download" into their browser.
